In order to thrive in today's economy there are many things an electric vehicle must have. A long battery range, affordability, and extended life cycle are among them. BASF has extensive experience working with high nickel cathode materials, which have higher energy storage and longer life cycle capabilities. Along with cost improvements in battery pack construction and battery management systems, the use of nickel cathode materials also provides an opportunity for automakers to reduce costs. Battery Packaging Can Stand to Lose Some Weight

With the growing understanding of how plastics and composites can help lighten engine components and systems, more OEMs are focusing on the battery packaging inside an electric vehicle's powertrain and how to minimize its size and weight. "Every pound deleted calculates into distance added per charge," said Calvin Nichols, transportation market segment manager at BASF. This challenge has long concerned automotive engineers, especially because a more powerful, often bigger and heavier, battery is needed to power cars for the distances that today's consumer's desire.

While electric drivetrains are definitely here to stay, some OEMS are starting to emphasize the performance and driving experience of these electric vehicles above the fuel economy - an interesting takeaway from the SAE Hybrid and Electric Vehicle Technologies symposium in La Jolla, California that I attended last week. It is important for us to go to events like this to hear the many different perspectives and opinions about where the market is trending. Today begins the SAE Hybrid and Electric Vehicle Technologies symposium, where industry leaders come together to discuss products, trends and the future of e-mobility. "We expect to continue seeing significant growth in the use of lithium-ion batteries for a variety of vehicles ranging from micro-hybrids to full battery electric vehicles in the coming years as we approach the 2025 CAFE deadline," says Mike Scarparti, e-mobility industry manager.
