Innovation Focused 'Think Tank' for Auto Solutions in Mexico

Mexico's automotive industry is experiencing unprecedented growth and is quickly becoming one of the strongest auto manufacturing markets in the world. Mexico has an estimated production volume of 3.3 million vehicles for 2015. And 83 percent of the production is exported, making Mexico the fourth largest exporter in the world. Coating Carbon Fiber Composites: Achieving a 'Class A Finish'

Carbon fiber has a very distinct look - industrial, textured, charcoal gray. And while some companies are experimenting with an exposed carbon fiber matte look, coating the material still plagues automakers and suppliers - especially as we try to achieve the 'Class A Finish' that is expected on a shiny new car. While not impossible, since some luxury brands are able to achieve it, a 'Class A Finish' takes time - time that mainstream brands with larger production runs just can't sacrifice. But with CAFE standards looming, we are striving to find the right solution to make coating carbon fiber more efficient and plausible.

Revolutionizing Automotive 3D Printing: Creating a Cobra in 6 Weeks

When you think of the latest in 3D printing, prosthetic limbs, building models and electronic gadgets might come to mind. Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), however, was determined to add a 1965 Shelby Cobra to that list, and they did so in a matter of weeks. The 1965 Shelby Cobra was different though, revolutionary actually. The team was small, but mighty. Six engineers at ORNL, a few designers and painters at TruDesign and local representatives from BASF worked hand-in-hand to not only master the large-scale automotive 3D printing, but also achieved a 'Class A Finish' on this iconic vehicle.

E-coating for the Win - Again

The electrocoat is a crucial component of the automotive coating process, helping the paint stick and protecting against corrosion. But not all e-coats are created equal. PSA Peugeot Citroën has presented BASF with a best supplier award for its CathoGuard® 800 cathodic e-coating, an innovative technology used on the production of 500,000 PSA Group vehicles per year. Among the benefits CathoGuard 800 offers, its cost saving potential is highly regarded by the PSA Group.

It's about that time again, after another year of research and color speculation, BASF is almost ready to reveal its color trend predictions that could impact 2018 model year vehicles.
