Up for Any Challenge, Coating the New BMW i3

BMW's new i3 is sleek, futuristic and fully electric. The car features a unique design and innovative components to reduce weight, all of which pose a challenge when it comes to coating the car.

We were up to the task. Our long standing relationship with BMW meant that we could collaborate to create a coating to meet the special design needs of the i3.

BASF supplied the basecoat for the new BMW i3 giving the car a clear, dynamic finish. BASF supplied the basecoat for the new BMW i3 giving the car a clear, dynamic finish.

"Our laboratory teams joined forces with the BMW Group to develop a coating for the special construction of the i3," said Frank Naber, BASF's account manager for BMW Europe.

We are supplying the four basecoat colors for the i3 and our paints contribute to the overall design, with an exceptionally clear finish that is dynamic and appealing.

The challenge came when we were tasked with coating the add-on plastic parts of this vehicle.

The challenge came when we were tasked with coating the add-on plastic parts of this vehicle. The passenger compartment of the i3 is made of carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) body-in-white on which plastic add-on parts are mounted. Our many years of experience in coating add-on parts paid off here and we were able to develop a special coating to meet the need.

We continue to support the coating process of the i3 by providing technical field service support daily at the Leipzig plant, where we became a supplier back in 2005.

Our partnership with BMW grows stronger as we supply modern paint systems to meet their design specifications worldwide.
