Reach Zero Evap Standards with Emission Control Technology

Across the globe, evaporative emissions are being regulated to reduce air pollution--with the end goal to drive fuel vapor emissions down toward zero.

Evaporative hydrocarbon emissions occur when fuel molecules escape from the vehicle. Hydrocarbons react with nitrogen oxides and sunlight and form ground level smog, which can cause eye irritation and aggravated breathing.

Global OEMs and engine manufacturers are striving to meet stringent zero evap standards with a minimal impact on vehicle design and performance. A partner in this ongoing effort is BASF, which is creating innovative, cost-effective solutions. BASF has unsurpassed expertise in evaporative emission control system technologies and its EvapTrap™ XC for the fuel canister offers best-in-class hydrocarbon capture, enabling automakers to successfully meet the LEV III/Tier 3 regulation requirements.

EvapTrap XC hydrocarbon absorber technology

EvapTrap XC hydrocarbon scrubber technology controls harmful hydrocarbons in the fuel system and improves capture efficiency.

EvapTrap XC is a hydrocarbon scrubber technology aimed at helping meet the LEV III/Tier 3 20 mg per test canister. This solution offers best-in-class adsorption at 50 percent higher capacity than the industry standard.

OEMs use activated carbon pellets in the vapor canister to adsorb the majority of the hydrocarbons from the fuel system, but to meet tightening regulations, they are applying secondary traps to control the fine hydrocarbons that can break through the carbon pellets. EvapTrap XC has demonstrated an improvement to traditional ceramic traps and is designed to be durable for the life of the vehicle or 15 years or 150,000 miles. The secret behind this solution is the advanced cell structure that improves hydrocarbon capture efficiency.

By innovating and working collaboratively, OEMs and suppliers can meet these stringent regulations and achieve cleaner air for future generations. To learn more about BASF's mobile emission catalyst solutions, visit
