Smart forvision Series: Cool Paint, Reflective Film Fight Heat Rays

No motorist enjoys being hit with a swift kick of stagnant, hot air when opening the car door, or trying to avoid touching hot surfaces that feel like hot lava after the car has sat out on a warm day.

Heat management solutions not only provide a motorist with greater comfort but they also enable the car to be more efficient as less energy is required by the air conditioning unit to cool the vehicle.

At BASF, we have two solutions for automakers looking to lessen the effect and block the sun's infrared rays and its heat from entering the car.

Our smart forvision concept car demonstrates these technologies.

These heat management solutions will keep the car cool and comfortable, even when it bakes in the sun all day long.

Cool Pigments

The vehicle features a "cool paint" - a new offering from BASF - that lower the absorbent components in the formulation of the paint. It even works for darker colors that typically absorb 90 percent of the sun's heat. Our Paliogen® Black L 0086 and Sicopal® Black K 0095 are both more IR-reflective than other existing paints.

When comparing a conventional black pigment and BASF's black pigment, a 59 to 63 degree Fahrenheit difference in temperature is felt.

Infrared Reflecting Window Film

The smart forvision car may look like it has a typical windshield but it actually features a paper-thin infrared reflecting film we call Lumogen® IR 1050 between the two glass panes.

Our product is different because it is not made of metals; instead it is entirely organic and transparent.

The film is designed to only filter out infrared rays but enables other rays such as light, GPS and telephone signals to pass through to maintain the optimal driving experience.

These heat management solutions will keep the car cool and comfortable, even when it bakes in the sun all day long.
