Smart forvision Series: How Ultramid Lightens the Wheel Rim by 30 Percent

Our thermoplastic polymer wheel rim is the first-of-its-kind and can revolutionize how wheels are produced from here on out, helping make cars lighter.

smart forvision's rims are made entirely out of plastic instead of metal, yet they do not sacrifice the safety or stability of the vehicle.

The revolutionary strength comes from millions of fine, long-glass fibers that are set in our Ultramid® plastic. These fibers along with the high-performance material make the rim durable, efficient and safe.

The benefit of this product stems from plastic being a sustainably lighter weight material than metal, 30 percent lighter to be precise.

This product reduces the weight of each wheel by 3 kilograms (6.6 pounds), 12 kilograms (26.5 pounds) across the whole car.

The weight reductions make the car more energy and fuel efficient and introduce savings that could drastically increase the range of electric vehicles.

Testing has begun to see if this wheel would have a feasible place in today's production and automotive industry or if, for right now, it will have to remain a thing of the future.
